Anagrams

  1. Ristikkotupa
  2. Games
  3. Anagrams

A row of shuffled letter tiles and a row of empty places. Put the letters back in order to spell a word; then the next set appears, a little longer than the one before.

How Anagrams works

Tap the letter tiles in the order of the word, or type them on a keyboard. Tap a placed letter to send it back. When the places hold the right word, the puzzle moves on to the next set. The shuffle button puts the tiles in a new order if they keep hiding the word.

Every set of letters spells exactly one word in the language’s list — there is no second anagram to argue about, and the scramble itself is never a word. Easy has six words of four or five letters, Medium eight words of five to eight letters and Hard eight words of six to ten letters.

A hint puts one more correct letter in place and locks it. Hints are counted, but the word is still solved when you complete it.

Ways to unscramble faster

  • Find the ending first. Many long words end in a familiar group: -tion and -ness in English, -zione and -mente in Italian, -ság and -ség in Hungarian, -nen and -us in Finnish. Put those tiles aside and the rest gets shorter.
  • Pair letters that like each other. TH, CH and ST in English; GL, GN and SC in Italian; SZ, GY and NY in Hungarian, each of them two tiles; doubled consonants in Finnish.
  • Read the letters in a different order. Vowels first, then consonants, or the tiles from right to left: it loosens the grip of the order on the screen.
  • Shuffle on purpose. If the same false start keeps forming, shuffle the tiles; a different order breaks the pattern your eye has fixed on.
  • Trust a real word. Since every set has a single answer, any real word you can spell with all the tiles is the answer.

Questions about Anagrams

Can a set of letters make two words?

No. Every answer was chosen because its letters spell no other word in the list.

How many words are in one puzzle?

Six on Easy and eight on Medium and Hard, each one a little longer than the one before.

Do hints solve the word for me?

A hint places one correct letter. You still finish the word yourself.

Why are some words never answers?

Answers are common base forms from each language’s dictionary, so rare words, plurals and inflected forms are left out.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes: type the letters, Backspace takes the last one back and Space shuffles the tiles.
