A first evening at Ristikkotupa

Six games can be a lot for a first visit. Here is a short tour: which game suits which mood, how to move the letters, and what happens to your progress.

Pick a game by mood

If you want something calm, start with Word Search: the words are listed and you only have to find them. Fill-In is calm too, but it rewards careful thinking, since every word has one right place.

If you like a clear target, try Hidden Word or Word Ladder. Hidden Word is six guesses and done; Word Ladder is a little climb where you can always see how far you are from the end. Anagrams and Letter Wheel are for the moments when you enjoy staring at letters until they fall into place.

Fingers, mouse or keyboard

On a phone everything works with one finger. In Word Search and Letter Wheel you drag across letters; in the other games you tap. With a mouse the same moves work with the button held down.

With a keyboard you can play most of the games without touching the screen: type the letters and press Enter in Hidden Word, Word Ladder, Anagrams and Letter Wheel, and use the arrow keys and Enter in Word Search. Ctrl+Z undoes the last move wherever undo is allowed. Fill-In still needs a tap to choose a place in the grid.

Hints, undo and starting over

Every game has a hint, and hints are counted in the result, so you can see later how many you needed. Undo takes back moves one at a time, and Restart clears the puzzle — except in Hidden Word, where every guess is final.

The menu inside the game has the sound and vibration switches and your statistics for that game and level: puzzles played and solved, best time and runs of days.

Where your progress lives

Progress is saved in your browser as you play. A half-finished puzzle waits for you, and the shelf marks the numbered puzzles you have solved. Nothing is sent to us, and there is no account to make.

That also means progress belongs to one browser on one device. Playing on a phone and on a laptop gives two separate sets of statistics, and clearing the site’s data or using a private window starts from nothing.

Levels and numbers

Every game has forty numbered puzzles: numbers 1 to 14 are easy, 15 to 27 medium and 28 to 40 hard. After a solved puzzle, Next puzzle takes you to the following number. The daily puzzles are always medium.
